Humans are generating more and more rubbish. The reasons for this include the increasing world population, which means that there are more people on the planet, and the higher levels of wealth, which lead to more products being purchased and therefore more waste creation. In addition, many new products contain materials that are not biodegradable.
Much rubbish that is not recycled ends up in landfill sites. If these sites are badly run, harmful chemicals can leak out and contaminate the groundwater; methane, a greenhouse gas, can be generated by decaying organic wastes; or infections can be transported by, for example, rats and flies. Another method of waste disposal is by incineration, but with this there are health concerns about the chemicals emitted into the atmosphere. Not only are these methods potentially bad for the environment, it is a waste of materials that have taken time, money and energy to create.
To help solve the problem of too much rubbish, the 3 R’s principle should be applied: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
A reduction in the amount of waste generated can be achieved when shopping, for example, by buying not more than is needed, choosing products without excessive packaging, and buying items that can be reused or have been made from recycled material. To save paper waste, unwanted mail can be cancelled.
Many things can be reused, such as carrier bags, glass jars (for storage), old clothes (eg. for cushion covers), garden waste (for compost).
Recycling means turning the materials from waste into something new. Glass, paper, plastic, and metals such as aluminum and steel are all commonly recycled.
