In 1899 the first Indian film was screened, and Bollywood was born. In the 1950s, many Indians came to live and work in Britain and they brought their culture with them. Now, Bollywood's biggest audience outside India is in Britain where many of the films are shown with English subtitles.

The awareness of Bollywood cinema is substantial in the United Kingdom, where they frequently enter the UK top ten. Many films, such as Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) have been set in London. Bollywood is also appreciated in France, Germany, the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries. Various Bollywood movies are dubbed in German and shown on the German television channel RTL II on a regular basis.
